Nan, Nanny, Mom, Marie...

Marie Adeline Bruns was born January 28, 1917 at Crete, ND, to William George Henri Bruns and Myrtle Hemquist. German/Swedish. Her grandparents were Adeline Freitag and Henry Bruns, Sven Hemquist and Emma Sophia Johnson.

Marie attended grades 1-11 in Crete, ND, and her senior year at Oakes, ND. She went 1 year to Valley City State Teachers College, Valley City, ND, and then went back a couple years later to acquire more credit. She attended Montana University summer session. She taught rural school, grades 1-8 at Gwinner, ND, and grades 1-4 at Rutland, ND, and grades 1-3 at Turner, Montana. The year 1954-55 she taught primary grades at Crete, ND while Jim was in Vietnam.

Marie married James R. Murray January 1, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Stirum, ND. Jim went into the Air Force in May 1942. The next 22 years they lived in various places, Richmond, Ca., Hamilton Air Force Base, San Rafael, Ca., Novoto, Ca., then to Wiesbaden Germany for 3 years. The children enjoyed it there and while there they had Marie's sister Betty come stay with them for two and a half years. When they returned they were stationed at Mitchell Air Force Base, Long Island, New York. In 1954 Jim went overseas and the children and Marie returned to Crete for one year. In 1955 they moved to San Bernardino and Jim was stationed at Norton AFB. Jim retired in 1963 and they moved to Redondo Beach in 1964.

Marie played golf regularly and they both played bridge. They both enjoyed traveling, especially to see their relatives. After they got married.....they had 3 children: David, Jim & Kathleen. Jim passed away October, 1993.

Marie is survived by her children, David (Nancy), Tucson, Arizona, Jim (Jane), Manhattan Beach, California & Kathleen (Mur) Doherty, Rancho Mirage, California; her grandchildren, Terri (Matt) Pupach, Jim (Dana) Murray, Tucson, Arizona, Alexandra (Derek) Teklak, Costa Mesa,California, Shane (Shawnee) Doherty, Phoenix, Arizona, Devon Murray, Manhattan, California; 3 great grandchildren, Nathan & Noah Pupach and Mallory Murray, as well as and one brother, Robert Bruns, Black River Falls, Wisconsin; several nieces & nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers, George, Warren, Fez, Richard Bruns and her sister Betty (Bruns) Flynn.
